Huawei explains the application and challenges of blockchain technology in telecommunication networks

At the China Unicom 5G Blockchain Symposium sponsored by China Unicom Network Technology Research Institute on December 12, Huawei's core network experts made a keynote speech on "Analysis of the Trend of the Impact of Blockchain on Telecom Networks".
Based on the practice tracking of the international telecommunications industry blockchain and Huawei's research on telecommunications networks, four key applications are proposed:
1. Provide a unified and equal user identity based on the blockchain, and open up cooperation channels for telecommunications applications and Internet applications.
2. Provide quasi-real-time roaming reconciliation and call bill settlement based on the blockchain, reduce operation and maintenance costs, and improve user experience.
3. Blockchain-based network resource management, paid for as needed, and improved resource allocation efficiency and economic benefits.
4. Blockchain-based capabilities are open, and it is easy to establish an efficient, equal, and open industrial ecology.
At the same time, the potential challenges of blockchain application in the telecommunications industry are also proposed:
1. Scalability: The ledger is replicated on distributed nodes, each node has global information, and the performance is limited to a single node, which brings challenges to the telecommunications network.
2. Substitutability: Blockchain technology is not the only alternative technology used in the telecommunications industry. The advantages of blockchain technology need to be further explored.
3. Technology maturity: Blockchain technology is a relatively new technology, which is still evolving, and business scenarios still need to be verified.
4. Supervision: The conflict between the characteristics of blockchain technology and certain regulations needs to be properly resolved.
