US SEC Subsidiary Office's 2020 inspection focus includes digital assets

On January 7, the Compliance Inspection Office (OCIE) of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced the focus of inspections in 2020. These include Fintech and innovation, including digital assets and electronic investment consulting. OCIE recognizes that financial technology, capital formation methods and market structures, and the use of new data sources (often referred to as "alternative data") by registered companies require continuous attention and review. OCIE will also continue to identify and inspect SEC-registered companies engaged in the field of digital assets, as well as RIAs (Registered Investment Advisers) that serve customers through automated investment tools and platforms.
