Research shows that Bitcoin produces about 22 megatons of carbon dioxide per year and is equivalent to the annual emissions of German city burgers.

According to Eurek Alert on June 13th, an interdisciplinary research team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany conducted a record study of the carbon footprint of the Bitcoin system. The results show that Bitcoin generates about 22 megatons of carbon dioxide per year. It is equal to the total annual emissions of the German city of Hamburg.
