BBC: Bitcoin consumes more energy per year than Switzerland

According to the BBC, “mines” around the world are rushing to tap bitcoin so much that their current energy consumption exceeds that of Switzerland. The BBC cited data from a new online tool at Cambridge University that Bitcoin currently uses about 0.21% of global electricity, equivalent to the power generation of seven advanced air-cooled reactor (AGR) nuclear power plants. In addition, Bitcoin consumes about 59 TWh of energy per year, slightly higher than Switzerland's 58 TWh, slightly lower than the Czech Republic's 62 TWh.
