Janice McAfee, the widow of John McAfee, is still in mourning. She has been surviving by doing odd jobs and has run out of funds, and she still doesn’t know what happened to her husband.

Since the cryptocurrency guru and antivirus pioneer John McAfee died in a Barcelona prison over two years ago, she has been staying in a secret location in Spain, only rescued from homelessness by the kindness of friends.

She cannot move forward because she still doesn’t know what happened to her husband, even though the Catalan court ruled in September of this year that John McAfee died by suicide, effectively closing the case.

In an exclusive interview with Zoom Magazine, she explained her current situation.

“For over two years, I not only had to deal with the tragedy of John’s death but it has been difficult to move forward because the authorities refuse to release the autopsy results. I have tried and tried, but they won’t let me see. There is an opportunity for an independent autopsy, but it costs 30,000 euros, and I don’t have the money. I just want to see his body with my own eyes, to know that this really happened.”

“It’s hard to make decisions on my own to find out what really happened when I don’t have the money, but I hope this interview gives people a chance to understand what happened. There are still people contacting me, they still can’t believe he’s gone,” she said.

1. What happened to John McAfee’s $100 million fortune?

Although John resigned from the antivirus company McAfee and sold his stocks in 1994, making his net worth exceed $100 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, his official wealth was estimated to have decreased to $4 million at the time of his death.

In 2019, he claimed to have no money and was unable to pay the $25 million in compensation owed to a court for a wrongful death lawsuit. However, he was arrested the following year on US tax evasion charges, with authorities claiming he and his team made $11 million by promoting cryptocurrency. In prison, he told his 1 million Twitter followers that he had no hidden cryptocurrency. “I have nothing. But I don’t regret it.”

According to Janice, her husband had no will or estate, so there was no money, and because of the judgment against him in the US, it was highly unlikely that any financial assets would be passed on to her.

There are stories of secret treasures and documents hidden there, but Janice was deliberately kept in the dark by her husband (regarding the so-called “hidden treasure”), so that she wouldn’t be in danger. With John’s untimely death, she still has many unanswered questions.

“I don’t think things will end the way they think. I don’t know if he committed suicide.” We talked every day while he was imprisoned near Barcelona. I don’t know how he was hanged.”

“I don’t know if it was with a rope or shoelace. The prison report says that when they found him, he was still alive; when they discovered him, he had a pulse and was breathing. The pulse was weak, but a pulse is a pulse.”

John McAfee and his wife Janice McAfee were deeply in love.

Janice can’t believe that when he was found with a noose or shoelace around his neck in the prison cell, the doctors there apparently attempted CPR without first loosening it.

“I went to school to become a registered nursing assistant, and I know how to perform CPR. Even in movies, the first thing you do is: clear the airway.”

“If someone has something around their neck, that’s the last thing you want to do. The first thing is to clear the obstruction, but from the prison footage, it can be seen that this did not happen. I don’t know if it was negligence or stupidity; it just feels sinister. But now I’m just guessing, and I don’t want to do that.”

2. Janice McAfee feels frightened after John’s death

After her husband’s death, Janice is very worried about her own safety. Although John assured her that the authorities were only after him, not her, she still fears that she might become a target for others.

“John always assured me that he wouldn’t tell me anything that would put me in danger; that was a comfort. He publicly revealed the 31 TB of information he apparently possessed, but he never shared that information with me, and I don’t know where it is or if it even exists.”

“But I feel safe now. I have nothing to hide, I don’t even know how he died or what he possessed. If there was an independent autopsy, I could find some peace. There is a chance to do so, but the cost is very high.”

The first time I met Janet and John was at a blockchain conference in Malta in 2018. Just like the crypto world at the time, it was chaotic, but chaos was good.

I interviewed him on stage, which wasn’t my finest moment, or maybe it was. Being with him had a kind of influence on me, making me more carefree on stage. Maybe that’s what he could do, being a sophisticated guy.

John was drinking whiskey by the side of the stage, but he was sober, clear-headed. Janet was there with him, protecting him from the thousands of people who wanted to talk to him.

She reminded me of how I felt when I interviewed Kim Kardashian in Armenia – calm, composed, almost Zen-like in her presence. I immediately liked and trusted Janet.

Later, after the interview on stage ended, a couple of photographers found me. They were working on an upcoming documentary about cryptocurrencies and wanted to talk to John. Could I help?

I wasn’t sure, but I texted Janet and she said it was fine; John obviously liked me. I was invited up to the penthouse suite and convinced the armed guards outside the room to vouch for the people I was with. Again, not something I do every day.

John smiled when he saw me. “It’s you again, my god!” But he was gracious with the couple and invited me to join him on a private yacht ride in the harbor of Valletta that evening.

What happened on the private yacht stays there, but we became friends there, mainly because I was the only non-smoker, according to John. More invitations followed – especially when he was still on the run and hiding on an island near North Carolina.

We kept in touch, and during the pandemic, I interviewed him a few times for my podcast. When I reached out to Janet on Twitter/X to ask if she was interested in doing the first interview, she said John considered me a friend and was happy to do it.

Three, Janet McAfee still wants to recover John McAfee’s body

That’s the background story of this interview, but more importantly, the journey starts now. Janet is determined to fulfill John’s wish – if he is dead, he wants his body to be cremated.

“His body is still in the morgue of the prison where he died. I don’t know why they decided to keep his body. They don’t need it. Two years ago, I had the money for an independent autopsy; a year ago, I had the money, but now I don’t.”

“I hustle everywhere to make a living; it doesn’t matter. What matters is what I can do for John. I am not the victim – John is the victim – I need the autopsy report not to continue fighting with the Spanish authorities, but to know what exactly happened to him.”

I told Janice that people think John ran out of time, that he reached the end of the road. In the hours before his death, the extradition order was issued, and his days in the American prison were sure to be difficult.

American authorities don’t like people who defy them, and he was an example. In some ways, isn’t a clear suicide reasonable for a proud man?

“We never talked about this. Although he did tell me he wanted to be cremated, it was because he knew someone wanted to kill him, but that’s not the point.”

I don’t want to take sides. Just tell me what the body is saying. I’m not seeking justice – that doesn’t exist on this earth anymore. I just hope John’s wishes can be fulfilled.

Janice is an American citizen, but it’s understandable that she didn’t rush to return to the U.S. when she didn’t know her own identity.

IV. John McAfee Netflix Documentary

A Netflix documentary titled “Gringo: The Wild World of John McAfee” was released last year, depicting her and John as fugitives, but Janice believes it’s not a true story.

It’s more about the journalists’ own story, their attempt to portray a public figure through sensationalized narratives, but they didn’t quite achieve that. They focused their attention where the focus should have been on why McAfee wanted to be a so-called fugitive…or the real story of Janice being with him.

“People will soon forget, and I understand why, because the world today moves very fast. I just hope he can be remembered correctly, that’s the least he deserves.”

Janice wants to end it. She wants to cremate her husband, remember him with love, and figure out what the next step should be.

I hope she can fulfill her wish. Everyone should have the chance to move on, and Janice McAfee more so than many others.
