In July of this year, the Layer2 scaling solution Base built by Coinbase was opened to developers and officially launched its mainnet on August 10th.

The Base network is built on OPStack, connecting to the Ethereum network and sharing security and resources. At the beginning of its launch, Base quickly gained market attention with the myth of the BALD token skyrocketing overnight; the SocialFi application friend.tech further brought Base into everyone’s sight – friend.tech not only ignited the social track, but also quickly pushed up Base’s TVL.

Recently, CoinGecko released a report analyzing the TVL and market share changes of multiple Layer 2 networks this year. Base, which was launched just a few months ago, has already become the fifth largest Layer 2 network.

Exclusive Interview with Base: After creating the popular application friend.tech, where will it focus on next?

From the changes in market share, we can see that Base has become the fastest growing Layer 2. According to DeFiLlama data, Base’s TVL has already exceeded $300 million.

Exclusive Interview with Base: After creating the popular application friend.tech, where will it focus on next?

There are already many Layer 2 solutions in the crypto market. How does Base achieve breakthroughs in this fiercely competitive race? It requires a flourishing ecosystem and successful creation of “popular applications,” and of course, the brand effect brought by Coinbase is also very important.

According to incomplete statistics, the number of projects in the Base ecosystem has exceeded 100, and the scale is relatively complete. Infrastructure occupies a significant portion, including but not limited to bridges, on-ramps, wallets, oracles, and node providers, among others.

In addition to native projects, many well-known brands have also expanded their businesses to the BASE chain through multi-chain deployment, including Uniswap, OpenSea, and other well-known projects.

Last week, Bangkok hosted the week-long “Blockchain Genesis and 2023 Thailand Blockchain Week” event. Odaily Planet Daily interviewed GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS, the Asia-Pacific Regional Head of Base, on the current situation and development of Base.

GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS has previously worked for well-known companies such as Facebook and BlackBerry. Interestingly, before joining Base, he served as the Southeast Asia President of the popular social application Tinder. Does GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS’s experience in Tinder contribute to Base’s success in the social field? Is this another coincidence of fate?

Below is a transcript of the conversation

Odaily Planet Daily: How does Base maintain its competitiveness in such a fiercely competitive Layer 2 market?

GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS: The main purpose of Layer 2 is to scale the Ethereum network, and I believe that each Layer 2 has its specific use case. So, in order to stay competitive in this fierce market environment, it is crucial to utilize Layer 2 technology effectively.

For Base, we are striving to attract the next billion users. Therefore, our goal is to become the most user-friendly Layer 2 platform, thereby bringing more innovation and engaging use cases.

Odaily Planet Daily: What measures has Base taken specifically to attract more developers?

GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS: What we are discussing is not just narrative and technology. The Base chain will empower developers to build on our platform. We are actively working on optimizing the OP Stack for scalability, which is also for Base to achieve broader adoption.

Base also has a unique advantage – it is incubated within Coinbase, a well-known brand and a large publicly traded company in the crypto industry. Therefore, I believe Base has high levels of trust and credibility, which is also a distinctive advantage.

Odaily Planet Daily: Which areas will Base focus on in its support?

GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS: This is a very important question for Base. Base was just launched at the end of August, and our mission is to attract the next billion users to the world of blockchain.

In order to achieve this goal, we are still exploring the best path. We have seen the success of SocialFi, such as friend tech, but we have also seen more use cases based on DeFi and gaming being built on Base.

Regardless, Base does not have a specific positioning in a vertical track – I think this is very unique. Because, in order to attract the next billion users, efforts from all aspects, fields, and tracks are needed.

Odaily Planet Daily: There is an opinion that there are already too many Layer 2s now, and maybe one day there will be more chains than applications. What is your view on this issue?

GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS: Indeed, there are a lot of Layer 2s, but I don’t think we will ever reach a point of “too many Layer 2s.”

I understand that everyone is currently striving to expand the Ethereum network through Layer 2. We now have various Layer 2 technologies. And over time, only a few Layer 2 technologies with very clear use cases and importance will remain. So, currently, we are still in the early stages.

As part of the Layer 2 ecosystem or Layer 2 protocol, we just need to collectively aim in one direction – to enable people to use Onchain use cases more frequently in a simple and user-friendly manner.

Odaily Planet Daily: Are there any major events happening in Base in the near future?

GIULIANO OCTAVIANOS: There will be some major events in the coming weeks.

First is the Optimism bounty. Since Base is built on the OP Stack, any developer building on Base can apply for Optimism RetroPGF to receive a bounty.

Secondly, we have just launched the Base Builder grant, which is aimed at developers who are already building on Base and seeking to innovate further.

In addition, there are some other things coming up. Overall, we are trying to attract a large number of blue-chip dApps to Base so that everyone can easily use their favorite dApps on Base.
