Game studios level up with blockchain integration under the radar
Game studios discreetly adopt blockchain technology without the hypeBlockchain and Gaming: A Match Made in Madeira
Once again, Cointelegraph was present at the illustrious Madeira Blockchain 2023 event, where the Portuguese islands unveiled their plans to conquer the digital age with startups and tech talent. But amidst the regional Web3 excitement, something caught our attention: the often-rocky relationship between blockchain technology and the gaming industry.
During a riveting roundtable discussion, several studios shared their misadventures integrating blockchain into games. They revealed the challenges they faced, like getting buy-in from developers, pleasing players, and convincing publishers. It was not an easy task, to say the least.
One studio, called Redcatpig, found themselves knee-deep in blockchain gaming solutions. Although they were passionate about the potential benefits for gamers, they still struggled to communicate the value of this revolutionary technology to their own team. Marco Bettencourt, the CEO, lamented, “I had to convince my team that this blockchain thingamajig can make games better, which wasn’t a walk in the park, let me tell you!”
But despite the hurdles, Redcatpig pushed forward, determined to create immersive gaming experiences. Their upcoming game, HoverShock, set to release in 2024, will feature mind-blowing nonfungible token (NFT) skins and drones that players can trade within the game’s own marketplace. And the best part? Players can purchase these digital treasures using good old-fashioned money or even cryptocurrencies!

And guess what? Redcatpig’s secret power move was avoiding the notorious buzzwords associated with blockchain. Who needs all that jargon anyway? As Bettencourt wisely proclaimed, “Players don’t need to understand all this Web3 or blockchain mumbo jumbo. All they need to know is that if they own a skin, they can sell it whenever they want. Simple as that!”
But Redcatpig wasn’t the only studio wrestling with blockchain integration. Another company, VEU, faced their fair share of pushback from their community when they introduced blockchain technology into their virtual world navigation solutions. Nuno Rivotti, the chief product officer at VEU, sighed, “Honestly, players don’t need a PhD in blockchainology to use our product. They just need to appreciate it without overthinking everything. It’s time for the industry to move on, just like we did with past technologies.”
Interestingly, despite these occasional battles, game developers in Portugal have embraced blockchain with open arms. It has become a key innovation in their pipelines and even part of government investment strategies. The eGames Lab, a collaboration of 22 public and private entities, aims to support the country’s video game industry in its quest for global domination. “Blockchain is a fundamental part of our Recovery and Resilience Plan,” declared Pedro Dominguinhos, the president of the National Monitoring Commission. Talk about leveling up!
So, my fellow digital asset enthusiasts, it seems that gaming and blockchain are set to form an unbreakable bond. Let’s give a round of applause to studios like Redcatpig and VEU, who are fearlessly pushing boundaries and revolutionizing the gaming landscape. And to all the players out there, keep your eyes peeled for the blockchain magic happening behind the scenes. Who knows, your next gaming adventure might just be a masterpiece from the blockchain universe!
