Summary of the 162nd Ethereum Execution Layer core developer meeting: The reasonable target time for the Cancun upgrade is October.
The 162nd Ethereum Execution Layer core developer meeting concluded that the Cancun upgrade is expected to take place in October. On May 25th, the 162nd Ethereum Execution Layer Core Developer Meeting (ACDE) was held. The main topics of discussion were the impact analysis of EIP-4758 and EIP-6780, progress on EIP-4844, and the possible inclusion of EIP-5920, 5656, and 7069 in the Cancun upgrade. Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy Digital, summarized the content of the meeting in a brief article.
EIP-4758 and EIP-6780 are two different proposals for deprecated self-destruct opcodes. The results of Dedaub’s impact analysis on EIP-4758 and EIP-6780 are: “We believe the impact of EIP-4758 and EIP-6780 is controllable, and due to the simplicity of implementation in Ethereum clients, it may be positive, especially if EIP-6780 is chosen.”
Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, discussed the update to the block validity rule in EIP-4844, which clearly defines the maximum blob count for each block. Developers also discussed the preparation for the next EIP-4844 testnet Devnet #6. Lodestar (CL) developer Gajinder Singh proposed multiple clean-ups for referencing transaction network payload. The last topic of EIP-4844 is the decision to remove the SSZ serialization format from the EL implementation of proto-danksharding.

Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, said that the reasonable target date for the Cancun activation is October 2023. Geth (EL) developer Lightclient confirmed this statement, stating that there is “at least 5-6 months” left for the upgrade based on its current scope.
Core developer Tim Beiko suggested that developers revisit the conversation around the Cancun upgrade scope in future conference calls, and he also suggested that future conversations around expanding the Cancun scope be limited to the following five EIPs: EIP-5920, 5656, 7069, 4788, and 2530.
