The Misadventures of Sinbad, North Korea’s Crypto Mixer

U.S. Treasury Imposes Sanctions on North Korean Government's Cryptocurrency Mixer Sinbad

The U.S. Treasury has slapped sanctions on Sinbad, the North Korean government’s cryptocurrency mixer.

Ahoy, me hearties! Gather round and listen to the tale of Sinbad, the notorious crypto mixer that has landed itself in treacherous waters. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, Sinbad, the government-backed sundal of North Korea, has been slapped with some hefty sanctions. It seems this pirate treasure chest has been quite the “key money-laundering tool” for the notorious cyber-hacking group, Lazarus Group.

Arr, the U.S. Treasury claims that Sinbad has swashbuckled millions of doubloons worth of virtual currencies plundered by the cyber-hacking collective. But Lazarus Group’s crimes go beyond pillaging virtual booty. They’ve been accused of using Sinbad to hide their treacherous transactions, including sanctions evasion, drug trafficking, and even the purchase of vile child abuse materials. Shiver me timbers!

Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Wally Adeyemo, has declared, “Mixing services that enable scoundrels like the Lazarus Group to launder stolen assets will face serious consequences!” The Treasury Department be ready to unleash all their cannons against virtual currency mixers like Sinbad to thwart their dastardly deeds. While they be havin’ a soft spot for responsible innovation in the digital asset realm, they won’t hesitate to send these bilge rats to Davy Jones’ locker.

But this ain’t the first time the U.S. Treasury has set its sights on these nefarious rogues. In 2019, they gave the dastardly Lazarus Group and their henchmen, Bluenoroff and Andariel, a taste of their steel. Then in May 2022, they fired their cannons at Blender, Sinbad’s predecessor. And let’s not forget November 2022, when the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Tornado Cash for helping the Lazarus Group with their misdeeds. Turns out, Tornado Cash got hit so hard it had to change its name!

And if you thought these villainous acts were the extent of their crimes, think again! North Korea has been caught red-handed, using Sinbad to launder stolen virtual booty and fund their unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs. These scallywags are even recruiting their own info-tech pirates to commit fraud and rake in more booty in the form of virtual currencies. It’s a digital pirate’s paradise, I tell ye!

But let’s not forget Sinbad’s own escapades. This crypto mixer has quite the track record of successful heists. It washed away a “significant portion” of the $620 million stolen in the Axie Infinity raid of March 2022. And if that wasn’t enough, it also helped clean up the loot from two separate $100 million heists in June 2022 and June 2023. Sinbad sure knows how to sail its way to profits!

Now, me hearties, listen closely. The U.S. Treasury has ordered all scallywags who have dealings with Sinbad to walk the plank. Any property or assets in the possession or control of Sinbad or its crew will be blocked and reported to the Treasury. And anyone who dares to associate with this treacherous pirate may find themselves facing their own sanctions!

So, beware, me mateys! The seas of the digital asset world be treacherous, and even the most cunning pirates can face their reckoning. Keep a weather eye on your investments and stay far away from the likes of Sinbad and its ilk. Now, off ye go, me hearties, and may your digital assets journey be smooth and filled with treasure! Yo ho ho!
