Bug Fixes: Putting A Stop to the Bitcoin Congestion Chaos

Bitcoin Ordinals Could Be Stopped with Patched Blockchain Bug, Developer Claims

Developers claim that if a bug in the blockchain is fixed, Bitcoin Ordinals could be prevented.

Imagine a bustling city road during rush hour, with cars bumper-to-bumper, horns blaring, and drivers ready to tear their hair out. Now replace those cars with new Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens, causing a similar congestion chaos on the Bitcoin network. Just when sanity was about to be restored, a bug fix has come to the rescue!

According to a Bitcoin Core developer, Luke Dashjr, the congestion has been caused by a vulnerability that “exploits a vulnerability” (yes, you read that right) in the Bitcoin Core code. It turns out that inscriptions, those sneaky messages used by Ordinal and BRC-20 creators to embed data on Satoshi’s creation, have been mercilessly “spamming the blockchain.”

You see, the Bitcoin Core code has had a limit on the size of extra data in transactions since 2013. But these inscriptions have been bypassing this limit like a master escape artist. They’ve been obfuscating their data as program code, sneaking past the watchful eyes of the blockchain police.

However, fear not! The bug that allowed the inscriptions to pull off these shenanigans has been fixed in the latest update to Bitcoin Knots. Think of Bitcoin Knots as a superhero version of Bitcoin Core, with some untested but exciting features thrown into the mix.

Now, dear readers, you might be wondering, “Will Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens cease to exist once this vulnerability is resolved?” To which Dashjr replied with a confident “Correct!” (Cue imaginary fireworks for Bitcoin lovers). Rest assured, existing inscriptions will still be around, but the chaos they wrought will come to an end.

But hold your horses, my crypto enthusiasts! Dashjr dropped a bombshell. He revealed that Bitcoin Core is still vulnerable in the upcoming v26 release, leaving us all heaving collective sighs (and possibly frantically searching for bunny slippers).

Ocean, the decentralized mining protocol where Dashjr is chief technology officer, came to the rescue with yet another X post. They declared that the Bitcoin Knots upgrade has finally fixed this long-standing vulnerability, making it a “denial-of-service attack” on the Bitcoin network. Take that, pesky spammers!

As a result of this update, Ocean has promised “more real transactions” in their blocks, indicating a hopeful end to the congestion chaos. They’ve labeled Ordinal inscriptions as the culprit, rendering them guilty of disrupting the peace and flow of Bitcoin.

Dashjr, like a warrior against the chaos, has been vehemently opposed to Ordinal inscriptions from the get-go. He claims the “damage it’s doing to Bitcoin and Bitcoin users (including future users) […] is huge and irreversible.” To him, this has been an attack on Bitcoin itself from the very beginning. Talk about a passionate defender!

The Ordinals protocol, pioneered by Casey Rodarmor in January 2023, allowed users to inscribe data and nonfungible tokens onto Satoshis—the smallest denomination of Bitcoin (BTC). Brilliant idea, right? Well, not when it leads to heightened congestion and sends the network into a frenzy of unconfirmed transactions, making everyone sweat buckets.

So here we are, my fellow digital asset adventurers, waiting eagerly for the bug-fix superheroes to save the day. In the meantime, sit back, relax, and enjoy the amusing chaos that comes with the world of blockchain and digital investments. After all, what’s life without a little excitement?

Readers, buckle up and share your thoughts! Have you ever experienced the wrath of blockchain congestion? Let’s embrace the chaos and conquer it with laughter!
