OpenAI suddenly announced a leadership change.

Due to infighting among senior executives, Sam Altman has been dismissed by the board of directors and will no longer serve as CEO.

This decision was made by the board of directors after careful consideration and review. The conclusion is:

Mr. Altman has consistently been dishonest in his communication with the board, hindering the board’s ability to fulfill its duties. The board is no longer confident in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.

It was a sudden decision as ChatGPT was about to celebrate its one-year anniversary, and Altman has been an iconic figure of OpenAI.

Even the employees of OpenAI were surprised by the announcement, and many expressed disbelief. The president himself even announced his resignation after seeing the news.

The announcement said that the former CTO, Mira Murati, will serve as interim CEO, and the search for a permanent successor is still ongoing.

Altman has been fired

After stepping down as CEO, Altman has completely left OpenAI and no longer holds any position.

Altman himself confirmed this news on his personal account:

The days at OpenAI have been unforgettable. This experience has deeply changed me, and I hope it also contributes something to the world. What I cherish the most is the experience of working with those talented colleagues.

As for my next plan, I will share more details soon.

Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI, stated that their cooperation will not be affected.

Frank Shaw, a Microsoft spokesperson, said in a statement:

We have established a long-term partnership with OpenAI, and Microsoft remains committed to Mira and her team, bringing about the next era of artificial intelligence for our customers.

Mira Murati appointed as CEO

In a statement, the OpenAI board of directors said:

The foundation of OpenAI is built on advancing our mission: ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The board remains fully committed to fulfilling this mission.

We appreciate the many contributions Sam has made to the founding and development of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe that new leadership is necessary as we move forward.

As a leader in the company’s research, product, and security departments, Mira is highly qualified to serve as interim CEO. We have full confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this transitional period.

Mira Murati graduated from Dartmouth College.

Prior to joining OpenAI, she worked at Tesla for three years as a senior product manager, responsible for Model X.

In 2016, after leaving Tesla, she served as Vice President of Product and Engineering at the VR company Leap Motion.

In 2018, she joined OpenAI as Vice President of Applied AI and Partner Relations.

In 2020, she was promoted to Senior Vice President of Research, Product, and Partner Relations.

In May 2022, she took on the role of Chief Technology Officer.

As of the time of writing, Murati has not commented on the matter.

New OpenAI Board of Directors

As part of the transition, former President Greg Brockman will also step down from the board of directors and continue in his role reporting to the CEO.

The new board of directors consists of Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever and three independent directors:

  • Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo

  • Technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley

  • Helen Toner from the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology

According to OpenAI’s organizational structure, the board of directors holds a key responsibility and authority.

Once the board of directors determines that “AGI has been achieved,” such a general artificial intelligence system “would be sequestered from commercial deployment under Microsoft’s IP/license terms and other commercial terms”.
