Canadians Give Cold Shoulder to Central Bank Digital Currency
Disappointment with Digital Canadian Dollar despite Widespread AwarenessNo love for digital Canadian dollar despite awareness
It seems like Canadians have given a resounding “eh, no thanks” to the idea of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). In a recent public consultation conducted by the Bank of Canada, the feedback was overwhelmingly negative, leaving the bank feeling as chilly as a polar bear’s paws.
The purpose of the consultation was to gauge Canadians’ sentiments towards CBDCs in a world dominated by digital transactions. But it seems like these polite and poutine-loving folks are not that keen on going fully digital. In fact, the survey revealed that Canadians demanded regulations mandating merchants to accept good old cash as payment. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, we like our maple syrup and our cash, eh!”
According to the consultation report, nearly 95% of the respondents were aware of the concept of a digital Canadian dollar. That’s impressive, but awareness alone doesn’t guarantee adoption. You know, just like how being aware of the existence of Bigfoot doesn’t mean you’ll actually go on a camping trip to find him.
Interestingly, despite being aware of CBDCs, 93% of the respondents still predominantly relied on paper cash for their daily payments, with a sprinkle of credit and debit cards. It’s like they want the convenience of technology while still holding on to the warm, fuzzy feeling of caressing those crisp banknotes. And let’s not forget that only 15% of the respondents held Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Looks like the Great White North isn’t completely sold on the magic of crypto just yet.

The majority of the respondents gave the Bank of Canada a clear and polite message: “Stop researching and building the capability for a digital Canadian dollar.” They might as well have said, “Take off, eh? We’re not interested in your fancy digital money, sorry.”
And here’s the twist: those who were already familiar with CBDCs were more hesitant to adopt the technology compared to those who knew nothing about it. It’s like discovering a new flavor of poutine on the menu at your favorite diner, but deciding to stick with your classic order of the regular stuff instead.
Only a small group of respondents, who had previously dabbled in crypto, showed a bit more interest in CBDCs. It’s like they’re saying, “Well, if I’ve already swam with the sharks, why not give these digital dolphins a try?”
So, it seems like Canadians prefer the familiar comfort of their cash and cards over the glitz and glamor of a digital Canadian dollar. The Bank of Canada might need to put their CBDC dreams on ice for now. But who knows, maybe one day, they’ll manage to thaw those frozen hearts and change their minds. Until then, keep on keeping it real, Canada!
