After one week of confirming Sam Altman’s return, OpenAI has finally officially announced the news of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman’s return. Along with this announcement, a new list of board members and two letters from Sam Altman and newly appointed board chairman Bret Taylor were also introduced.

In the letter, both of them explained the future work of OpenAI and answered some questions that many people wanted to know, such as the whereabouts of former board member Ilya Sutskever.

Here is the full text of the letter:

Sam Altman:

I will return to OpenAI as the CEO. Mira will resume her position as the CTO. The new board will consist of Chairman Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.

I have never been so excited for the future. I am extremely grateful for everyone’s hard work in the unprecedented unknown situation, and I believe our resilience and spirit will make us stand out in the industry. I feel very, very good about the probability of our mission’s success.

Before talking about what’s next, I want to express my gratitude to everyone.

I love and respect Ilya, I believe he is a beacon in this field and a treasure for humanity. I have no ill will towards him. Although Ilya will no longer be a board member, we hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how to keep him working at OpenAI.

I want to thank Adam, Tasha, and Helen for working with us to achieve this mission-oriented solution. I am delighted to continue working with Adam, and I sincerely appreciate the considerable effort Tasha and Helen have put into this process.

Also, thanks to Emmett, who played a critical and constructive role in helping us achieve this outcome. Emmett’s dedication to AI safety and the interests of stakeholders is evident.

Mira has shown outstanding performance throughout the process, selflessly serving the mission, the team, and the company. She is an excellent leader, and without her, there would be no OpenAI. Thank you.

Greg has been my partner in running this company, and although we haven’t figured out how to reflect that on the org chart yet, it will be reflected in the future.

Meanwhile, I just want to make it clear to all employees. Thank you for everything you have done from the beginning to last week.

Leadership Team–Mira, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lilian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, LianGuait, and many others who are apparently ready to manage the company without me. Some say that one way to evaluate a CEO is to look at how well you select and develop potential successors; in that regard, I have done much better than I imagined. In my opinion, the company can transition smoothly, and I hope everyone can clearly recognize this. Thank you all.

Jakub, Szymon, and Aleksander are all outstanding talents, and I’m glad to have them back with us, pushing us and our research forward. Thank you.

Thanks to everyone on our team, I believe there will definitely be a book written about this period in the future, and I hope the first sentence of the book will be how amazing the whole team is. We’ve been through it all without losing a single employee. You all have steadfastly supported each other, the company, and our mission. The most important thing for the team building AGI is the ability to handle pressure in uncertain situations and maintain good judgment throughout the process. Each and every one of you should give yourselves a pat on the back. Thank you all.

Throughout this process, Satya, Kevin, Amy, and Brad have been fantastic partners, always sticking to the right strategies, and they have been our support. If we couldn’t achieve our main goals, they were always there welcoming all of us. It’s clear that choosing to collaborate with Microsoft was the right decision, and I’m glad that our new board of directors will include them as non-voting observers. Thank you all.

Thank you to our partners and users for your support. We genuinely feel the support and care from all of you, which has helped all of us to get through this tough time. We haven’t lost a single customer, which will motivate us to work even harder for you all. We’re all excited to get back to work.

Will Hurd, Brian Chesky, Bret Taylor, and Larry Summers have sacrificed their own lives and put in tremendous effort to support this mission. I don’t know how they managed to do it so brilliantly, but they truly did. Thank you all.

Ollie also put aside his own life during this time and provided unconditional love and support, going above and beyond to help. Thank you all, I love you.

After expressing respect to everyone, let’s talk about what’s next.

The first priority is three important tasks.

First, advance our research plan and further improve our full-stack security work, which has always been the key to our work. Our research roadmap is very clear, and now is the time to focus on our work. I am as excited as everyone else and believe that we can turn this crisis into an opportunity! I will work together with Mira to push this work forward.

Second, we need to continuously improve and deploy our products to serve our customers. It is crucial for people to experience the benefits and prospects of artificial intelligence and have the opportunity to shape it. We still believe that excellent products are the best way to achieve this goal. I will work with Brad, Jason, and Anna to ensure that our commitment to global users, customers, partners, and governments remains unwavering.

Bret, Larry, and Adam will work hard to accomplish another extremely important task, which is to establish a diverse perspective board of directors, improve our management structure, and oversee an independent review of recent events. I look forward to working closely with them on these critical steps to instill confidence in OpenAI’s stability.

I am extremely excited to work together with all of you to build a beneficial AGI. We are the best team in the world, and this is the best mission in the world.

Love you all, Sam

Bret Taylor:

On behalf of OpenAI’s board of directors, I would like to express my gratitude to the entire OpenAI community, especially all the employees of OpenAI. Over the past week, we have come together and helped the company find a way forward.

Your efforts have helped this incredible organization continue its mission of ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. We are delighted that Sam, Mira, and Gerg are leading the company once again and driving it forward. We look forward to working with them.

As members of the board, we are committed to strengthening OpenAI’s corporate governance. Here is our plan:

We will establish a qualified and diverse board of directors whose collective experience represents the breadth of the OpenAI mission, from technology to safety to policy. We are pleased that the board will include a non-voting observer from Microsoft.

We will further stabilize OpenAI’s organization so that we can continue to fulfill our mission. This will include convening an independent committee of the board to oversee a review of recent events.

We will strengthen OpenAI’s management structure to ensure that all stakeholders, whether they are users, customers, employees, partners, or community members, can trust that OpenAI will continue to thrive.

OpenAI is an institution that is more important than ever before. ChatGPT has made artificial intelligence a part of the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people. Its proliferation has made artificial intelligence – its benefits and risks – central to almost every conversation about the future of government, business, and society.

We understand the gravity of these discussions and recognize the crucial role that OpenAI plays in the development and safety of these incredible new technologies. Each and every one of you plays a critical role in ensuring that we effectively address these challenges. We are committed to listening to your opinions and learning from you, and I look forward to engaging with you soon.

We are excited to be a part of OpenAI and to work with all of you.

Thank you, Bret Taylor
