Question: What is Maple, exactly?

In the process of continuous exploration, I found a large amount of article materials online (special thanks to these article authors), so I organized these materials into a structure.

On one hand, I hope it is useful to everyone, and on the other hand, I want to summarize and improve the learning effect.

Let me start with a one-sentence project introduction

Maple Finance is an online lending platform based on blockchain technology that allows users to borrow funds. It works similar to a digital credit cooperative or bank, but it is fully automated and decentralized, meaning there are no intermediaries involved, and all transactions are transparent and secure.

On Maple Finance, the borrowing process is similar to bank lending in real life. However, it uses blockchain technology for credit assessment and loan management. For example, if you want to borrow money from a bank, you usually need to provide a lot of personal and financial information, and the whole process may become slow due to manual review. But on Maple Finance, everything is automated and handled through smart contracts (self-executing digital contracts), which greatly speeds up the borrowing process and reduces costs.

Here’s another example, its workings are a bit like an automatic, digital lending club. Imagine a club where every member can borrow and lend money, and the rules of the club are open and transparent, with all transactions being automated and without any human intervention. This way, the borrowing process becomes fast, simple, and transparent, and because there are no intermediaries, the costs are also lower.

4.3 Token Economy Model Analysis

4.3.1 Token Total Supply and Distribution

Maple Finance’s native token is MPL. The total supply is 10,000,000 MPL, with the current circulating supply being 3,658,989 MPL. The original token distribution structure is as follows:

  • Liquidity Mining: 30%
  • Seed and Advisors: 25%
  • Seed: 26%
  • Public Sale: 5%
  • Treasury: 14%

4.3.2 Token Value Capture

The value of MPL tokens is mainly captured through protocol revenue sharing and equity rewards. MPL holders can stake their MPL tokens into a smart contract owned by Maple to receive xMPL tokens, and the income generated by the Maple Finance protocol will accumulate into xMPL. Specifically, Maple will use protocol revenue to buy back MPL tokens from the open market. As per MIP 008, initially, 50% of the protocol revenue will be used to purchase MPL tokens on a monthly basis. These MPL tokens will then be issued to the xMPL smart contract and evenly distributed to xMPL holders over a certain period of time.

The income of MPL tokens mainly comes from the origination fees on every loan on the Maple Finance platform, which is 0.99% annually. Two-thirds (66%) of the origination fees are paid to the Maple Finance treasury, and the remaining one-third (33%) is paid to the Pool Delegate who facilitated the loan. Maple Finance follows a simple business model – the more loans, the more income. As the income increases, the cash to buy MPL tokens from the open market also increases.

4.3.3 Core Token Demand

The core demand for MPL tokens includes:

  1. Stakers: They stake MPL tokens to earn xMPL and receive a share of the protocol revenue.
  2. Borrowers: They need to pay origination fees for their loans, and a significant portion of these fees become protocol revenue, thus increasing the value of MPL tokens.
  3. Governance Participants: MPL token holders have the right to participate in the decentralized governance process of the project. They can influence the future direction and decision-making of the project through voting.

With the token economic model mentioned above, Maple Finance is able to create a self-incentivizing ecosystem while ensuring the project’s continuous development and active community participation. In the future, with the introduction of xMPL, MPL token holders will be able to earn more rewards by staking MPL tokens and participating in protocol revenue, as well as engage in governance voting and provide unilateral pool coverage and other practical functions.

5. Preliminary Valuation

5.1 Key Questions

Question 1: What stage is the project in its business cycle? Is it in the mature stage or the early to mid-stage of development?

Maple Finance is currently in the early to mid-stage of development. While it has made some progress and successfully attracted users and capital, there is still significant room for growth. Its business model and technological foundation are in place, but it is continuously optimizing and expanding its ecosystem to attract more users.

Question 2: What are the main variables and factors affecting the project’s operations? Are these factors easy to quantify and measure?

The main variables and factors affecting the project’s operations include the total amount of loans, lending rates, user growth rate, liquidity provision, and community activity. These factors are relatively easy to quantify and measure, and can be obtained through monitoring platform data and community activities.

Question 3: What is the project’s management and governance mechanism?

Maple Finance adopts a decentralized governance approach through the use of MPL tokens. MPL holders can participate in project governance by voting and influencing the future development direction and decision-making of the project.

Question 4: Does the project have a reliable competitive advantage? Where does this competitive advantage come from?

Maple Finance’s competitive advantage lies in its unique lending model, partnerships, and technological innovation. By collaborating with top decentralized finance platforms, Maple Finance is able to offer unique lending solutions and provide value to users through its technological platform.

Question 5: What is xMPL? What is its purpose?

xMPL is a token obtained by staking MPL tokens and represents the holder’s stake in the Maple Finance protocol. xMPL holders can earn a share of the protocol’s revenue and participate in governance voting within Maple Finance.

Question 6: What are the unique features of Maple Finance’s lending model?

  1. Funds Pool Aggregation: Maple Finance aggregates funds from multiple parties by creating funds pools, which improves capital efficiency. Borrowers can borrow from these funds pools, while investors can invest in them to earn returns. This aggregation method allows Maple Finance to lower lending rates to some extent and provide better services to users.
  2. Credit Delegates Model: Maple Finance adopts a unique credit delegates model. Credit delegates are qualified and verified entities responsible for reviewing and managing borrowers’ loan applications. This model helps reduce credit risk and accelerate the lending process.
  3. On-chain Credit Assessment: Maple Finance also provides an on-chain credit assessment system that evaluates borrowers’ creditworthiness by analyzing their historical transaction data and other relevant information. This on-chain credit assessment system not only improves assessment efficiency but also lowers the cost of credit evaluation.
  4. Decentralized Governance: Maple Finance achieves decentralized governance through MPL tokens. MPL token holders can vote on important project matters, including parameter settings for funds pools, project updates, and optimizations. This decentralized governance model allows Maple Finance to better adapt to market changes and increases community activity and cohesion.

Question 7: What is “low collateralization”? How is risk evaluated?

In both digital finance and traditional finance, loans usually require the provision of assets of equal or higher value as collateral to protect the borrower from the risk of default. However, in Maple Finance, the concept of “low collateralization” means that borrowers may not need to provide collateral that is exactly equal to the loan amount or the collateral requirement may be relatively low.

For example, in a traditional lending environment, if you want to borrow $10,000, the bank may require you to provide assets worth $10,000 or more as collateral. But in Maple Finance, you may only need to provide assets of relatively lower value to borrow $10,000, for example, assets worth $5,000 as collateral. This low-collateral model allows more people to easily access funds, especially those who don’t have enough collateral but need funds. At the same time, through Maple Finance’s on-chain credit assessment mechanism, the platform can evaluate the credit risk of borrowers to protect the interests of both borrowers and lenders.
