Google’s “Seemingly Real” AI Demo Draws Accusations of Fakery

Google's Gemini demonstration is being called into question as 'fake' by critics

Google Gemini demo accused of being ‘fake

In a stunning twist that would make even the most seasoned illusionist proud, Google’s latest artificial intelligence model, Gemini, has gone from being the talk of the town to accused of being “basically entirely fake.” With 2.1 million views on YouTube, this six-minute video seemed to showcase Gemini seamlessly interacting with a human operator in real-time. From analyzing a duck drawing to inventing a game called “Guess the Country” based on a mere prompt of the world map, Gemini appeared to be a technological wonder. But alas, the truth is not always what it seems.

Oriol Vinyals, a Google Deepmind executive, took it upon himself to burst this technological bubble. He clarified that while the user prompts and outputs in the video were indeed real, they had been “shortened for brevity.” In reality, Gemini’s interactions were text-based and not voiced, taking much longer than the carefully edited snippets portrayed. Even Google admitted as much in their YouTube disclaimer: “For the purposes of this demo, latency has been reduced and Gemini outputs have been shortened for brevity.”

But the internet, always eager to pounce on a juicy scandal, erupted in a tempest of criticism towards Google. “Google LIED. The AI demo flaunting Gemini’s capacities was a FAKE,” exclaimed a software developer. “It was edited, it was cut to look like it was faster and more capable than it actually is,” declared another software engineer.

Even Google’s own employees were not immune to the skepticism surrounding the video. One brave soul whispered to Bloomberg that it painted an unrealistic picture of Gemini, showcasing how easy it is to make the AI tool look more advanced than it truly is. Surprisingly, the firm’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, didn’t utter a word about the fine-tuning that had gone into the creation of the deceptive six-minute video.

Yet, in the midst of controversy, a lone Google employee showed understanding. They shrugged and said, “Well, some degree of marketing is required to promote such products.” Ah, yes, marketing, the magician’s wand that can transform an underwhelming trick into a breathtaking spectacle.

But let’s not put all the blame on this magician’s apprentice. Another Google employee came forward to defend the video, claiming that individual words in Gemini’s responses were indeed genuine. The voiceover merely captured excerpts from the actual text prompts, showcasing what Gemini was truly capable of. So, perhaps amidst the smoke and mirrors, there was a kernel of truth after all.

When Gemini first debuted its mesmerizing tech demo, onlookers were awestruck. “Google’s new Gemini AI watches a guy draw a duck and explains what he’s doing each step of the way—not just literally or mechanically, it can infer what the guy is intending to do, why he is doing what he does. It feels… very human,” gushed Armand Domalewski, Data Analyst at Palo Alto Networks. Oh, how easily we are fooled by the allure of technology that appears human-like.

Launched as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google boasted that Gemini outshined leading AI models in 30 out of 32 benchmarks. Take that, GPT-4! But now, questions loom over Gemini’s true capabilities, and the once-impressive video is seen as nothing more than an elaborate optical illusion.

So, dear investors in the vast digital asset landscape, have we learned our lesson? As we navigate this exciting but sometimes treacherous world, let us always remember that what we see may not be what we get. The shiny veneer of technological marvels can hide a multitude of truths and embellishments. But fear not, for within this dazzling realm lies limitless potential and untold possibilities. Let us tread with caution, armed with knowledge, and never lose sight of our sense of wonder.

Now tell me, dear readers, have you ever been dazzled by an enticing tech demo, only to discover it was smoke and mirrors? Share your experiences in the comments below!
