Satoshi Nakamoto Gets Some Love in Canadian Parliament

Canadian Politician Encourages Community to Educate Themselves on Bitcoin, Citing Gensler's Previous Stance Prior to SEC Appointment

Canadian MP urges community to study Bitcoin, referencing Gensler’s pre-SEC position.

On the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin white paper release, something unexpected happened in the Canadian Parliament. Member of Parliament (MP) Joël Lightbound took the floor and delivered a heartfelt shoutout to the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Now, this wasn’t your ordinary “thank you” – Lightbound’s speech had a twist of humor and a sprinkle of professional wit.

In his address, Lightbound revealed that he personally owns Bitcoin, but instead of encouraging people to hop on the crypto train, he urged them to study it. He emphasized that Bitcoin was born during a financial crisis and has since morphed into a powerful tool empowering the underbanked and those living under oppressive regimes.

“Bitcoin has helped thousands of families avoid the tragedy of currency debasement. It stands for the truly progressive ideal,” expressed the Canadian MP. “So today, let me thank Satoshi Nakamoto, whoever that may be, and wish a happy 15th anniversary to the Bitcoin whitepaper.”

Now, what made this speech even more interesting were the quotes Lightbound chose to highlight. We had Jack Dorsey, the former Twitter CEO and notorious Bitcoin advocate, and surprisingly, Gary Gensler, the current United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chief, known for his sometimes contentious stance on crypto. Although, to be fair, Gensler’s quote is from a time before he held such a position of authority.

Back in 2019, Gensler wrote an opinion piece acknowledging the myriad of crypto projects in existence but singling out Satoshi Nakamoto’s brainchild as a catalyst for change. He recognized its potential to lower verification and networking costs, tackle economic rents and data privacy costs, and foster economic inclusion. Quite the endorsement, wouldn’t you say?

Gary Gensler Tweet

And true to the 15th anniversary spirit, Gensler himself sent out a tweet sending his wishes to Satoshi Nakamoto. However, being the SEC chief, he couldn’t resist slipping in a compliance message, cautioning crypto companies against tricking investors and urging them to comply with securities laws. Hey, at least he kept it real!

Before Gensler ascended to his SEC throne, the crypto community had high hopes for him, given his background in teaching the subject. Alas, his time as chief has been a mixed bag, leaving crypto enthusiasts with a bit of disappointment and some head-scratching moments.

So, dear readers, as we honor the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin whitepaper, let’s take a moment to appreciate the impact it has had on countless lives. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll finally uncover the true identity of the ever-elusive Satoshi Nakamoto. In the meantime, keep studying, keep learning, and keep embracing the wild ride that is digital asset investment!
