With only one computer, two adapters, and several wires, software engineers have completed the brake test of thousands of new cars’ wire-controlled chassis… This is an application of metaverse technology in intelligent operation rooms, as well as a microcosm of the metaverse empowering the transformation of the manufacturing industry.

Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and four other departments jointly issued the “Three-Year Action Plan for Innovation and Development of the Metaverse Industry (2023-2025)” (referred to as the “Action Plan” below), proposing measures such as building advanced metaverse technology and industrial systems, and forming a joint force to promote the development of the metaverse industry.

Turning the “metaverse” from a well-known concept into the operation room of tangible industries, new technologies have become powerful accelerators for the manufacturing industry. Several experts interviewed by People’s Daily Online said that developing the metaverse industry and promoting the integration and innovation of cutting-edge technologies can drive the development of the manufacturing industry towards high-end, intelligent, and green directions.

The Metaverse Empowers the Transformation and Upgrading of the Manufacturing Industry

“Through virtual simulation technology, we can simulate various working conditions in the laboratory, greatly improving R&D efficiency.” The head of a technology company said that for the R&D of new car technologies, the metaverse brings about revolutionary changes in the R&D mode. Through the metaverse’s virtual simulation technology, manufacturers can reduce costs and use efficient and precise electronic toolchain software to test, optimize, and manufacture products.

“The metaverse can bring various new generation information technology cluster effects to traditional manufacturing industries and play an important role in integrated empowerment, promoting the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry.” Cheng Xusen, professor of Renmin University of China and deputy director of the Metaverse Research Center, said that metaverse technology can help the manufacturing industry achieve the digital transformation of the entire lifecycle from production and processing to sales, while improving R&D efficiency, reducing training costs, and ultimately achieving autonomous and controllable security management of the supply chain.

The metaverse and the manufacturing industry can empower each other and promote the high-quality development of the digital economy.

Industry experts believe that the manufacturing industry is helping to accelerate the implementation of metaverse applications. Currently, the metaverse faces challenges such as complex technical systems, high investment costs, and unclear commercialization paths. Most metaverse products and solutions are still in the conceptual stage and cannot form a commercial closed loop in a short period of time. The manufacturing industry provides application scenarios for the metaverse and solves the problem of implementation difficulties; on the other hand, the manufacturing industry needs the metaverse to empower intelligent manufacturing. In the current era of 5G intelligent development, intelligent development has ushered in new opportunities. Software technology has become a crucial part of intelligent manufacturing, and metaverse technology is needed to empower various processes such as optimizing production processes, improving R&D efficiency, reducing training costs, and strengthening supply chain management.

“With the continuous development of technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, the industrialization of the metaverse is accelerating. The metaverse can provide users with immersive virtual experiences and covers a wide range of fields including entertainment, education, commerce, and industry, with very broad market prospects,” said Cheng Xusen.

Virtual and physical mutually promote the development of the real economy

The “Action Plan” proposes that the main goal is to build an industrial metaverse and empower the manufacturing industry. It vigorously explores the innovative transformation of the manufacturing industry through the mutual promotion of virtual and physical, focusing on the transformation of key industrial processes into the metaverse, the layout of key industries in the industrial metaverse, and the exploration of innovative application models for the industrial metaverse.

Building an advanced metaverse technology and industrial system, cultivating a three-dimensional interactive industrial metaverse, creating immersive interactive digital life applications, building a complete industrial support system, and constructing a secure and trustworthy industrial governance system are also receiving attention. At the same time, “enhancing key technologies”, “cultivating industrial ecology”, “empowering the industrial metaverse”, and “strengthening industrial foundations” have been explored and practiced from different dimensions such as technology, ecology, empowerment, and industrial foundations.

“In December 2021, Shanghai proposed the concept of ‘metaverse’ as an important platform for the interaction between the virtual world and the real society. This ‘Action Plan’ implements ‘virtual-physical interaction’ and ‘virtual-physical integration’ as policies, which is of great significance,” said Zhao Xing, a professor at Fudan University and director of the Institute of Metaverse and Virtual-Physical Interaction. “The concept of ‘virtual-physical mutually promoting’ is worth paying attention to.”

“Technologies such as digital twins and virtual-physical interaction have been applied in the research and development, testing, and production processes of the manufacturing industry, directly driving the upgrading of the manufacturing industry. At the same time, the metaverse has begun to bring about various types of high-end manufacturing related to hardware devices and intelligent interactive terminals, expanding the growth points of the manufacturing industry,” said Zhao Xing.

Currently, a new track of “virtual-physical mutually promoting” in the development of the manufacturing industry is gradually maturing. Zhao Xing said that the metaverse involves a wide range of fields, such as Henan’s cultural and tourism metaverse, Sichuan Chengdu’s digital content production, Zhejiang Hangzhou’s web3.0 industry, Shandong’s hardware equipment, and Shanghai’s scene applications, all of which show great potential. As a new track of the digital economy, the metaverse can promote the development of the digital economy and empower the real economy.

Technological innovation accelerates industrial upgrading and iteration

The “Action Plan” proposes to strengthen the integrated innovation of key technologies. Strengthen the integration and innovation of technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and virtual reality in the metaverse, accelerate the layout of key technologies, and accelerate the research and development innovation of basic software and hardware, and achieve breakthroughs in key areas such as high-end electronic components and modeling software as soon as possible.

Zhao Xing said that the metaverse provides a technical foundation and organizational space for the recombination of elements in the scenario of the real economy, from the macro operation of the city to the micro existence of consciousness. In the “Metaverse Empowers High-end Manufacturing Research” project in Zhejiang Province, it was found that the Taizhou Bay New Area in Taizhou City has explored the digitization of industries and the upgrading of manufacturing through the metaverse. During this period, the optoelectronics industry related to metaverse hardware has developed rapidly, and several key technology enterprises in LED display screens have been introduced, forming a good industrial atmosphere and innovation cluster in the short term.

The “Action Plan” proposes the goals for industrial development in accordance with long-term layout and step-by-step implementation: by 2025, comprehensive strength will reach the world’s advanced level, 3-5 globally influential ecological enterprises will be cultivated, 3-5 industrial development clusters will be created, and the initial results of industrial metaverse development will be seen. Major breakthroughs will be achieved in core technologies, forming a globally leading metaverse industry ecosystem, creating a mature industrial metaverse, and creating a healthy and sustainable industrial development environment.

“The metaverse has both the connotation of technological integration and the direction of industrial transformation.” Zhao Xing believes that the essence of the metaverse allows frontier technologies and industries that have not been implemented in the process of informatization, digitization, intellectualization, and wisdom to find systematic outlets, land applications, and thus promote the update of the real economy’s business forms.
