Web3 crosses barren borders, bringing possibilities to charity.

Web3 Breaks Boundaries, Empowering Charitable Opportunities Across Barren Landscapes

Interview: Raven, Hailey, Zhou Xingyu Author: 3WW3, Luckynn

3WW3 Afro-Asian-Latin American Research Institute will continue to interview influential figures in Afro-Asian-Latin American locals to discover the possibilities of web3.

Guest of this issue: Jacob Ogweno, Principal of Nissii School in Kenya, NGO member

DAO, Idealism, and African Schools

Jacob is already 59 years old. Three years ago, he passed the test of Busoga University and obtained a Doctorate in Education. When he was in primary school, the principal at the time waived his tuition fees, and later he successfully completed his studies with the support of a Finnish family.

He is now back in Kenya as the principal of NISII Christian Academy. For most people, education is to escape poverty, but for idealists, education is to solve poverty.

NISII Christian Academy is an educational institution initiated by the Christian community and was established in 2016. The school is located in western Kenya and aims to bridge the socioeconomic gap by providing comprehensive education and a homely atmosphere, helping homeless and vulnerable children escape poverty, and meeting their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and social care, to achieve sustainable development goals.

Jacob is excited about the organizational model of DAO. He believes that NISII’s organization needs to develop like DAO, and every volunteer and staff member should build this school based on a common ideal.

NISII’s curriculum is based on the actual needs of students, initiated freely by volunteers and teachers, creating the necessary courses together, such as horticulture, environmental protection, etc. Jacob told us, “NISII’s purpose is never just to cope with knowledge, our goal is to help students make a living through knowledge. Whether it’s planting or sports, we hope that students can earn income through the courses.”

Therefore, we introduced Jacob to the remote job opportunities of Web3 and the possibility of earning income through interaction on the blockchain.

Jacob has a strong willingness to cooperate, “If you can provide job opportunities or teach students about blockchain, I will definitely facilitate this.” Jacob is excited about this.

The Possibilities of Cryptocurrency Charity and Blockchain Mechanisms

NISII is an educational institution initiated by the Christian community and relies on public fundraising and the selfless dedication of volunteers to maintain personnel balance.

When we mention how the school operates, Jacob expresses that all income comes from donations, and the students are unable to pay tuition fees and have difficulty accessing the internet.

In the previous bull market, the financial attributes of cryptocurrencies reached their peak, but currently, the value of cryptocurrencies is returning to the original intention of blockchain, with continuous emphasis on “positive externalities” and “social value”.

Meanwhile, the Asia, Africa, and Latin America regions are in urgent need of Web3 infrastructure construction, bringing about Web 3 + economy.

Local builders have noticed that there are significant problems with charitable donations like NISII: lack of transparency in fund flow. Transparency is a major issue in the charitable sector today.

However, the two major obstacles hindering the development of traditional charitable work, transparency and trust, seem to be not a problem in the face of the immutable attributes of blockchain.

The immutability of blockchain transactions ensures clarity of responsibility, with all transactions recorded and visible to all participants, effectively preventing manipulation by external parties.

Improved transparency allows donors to track the destination of their individual donations in real-time, thereby increasing trust in charitable organizations.

The decentralized Web3 internet has also given birth to the concept of “cryptocurrency donations directly to beneficiaries.” In times of disaster or crisis when traditional banking services are unavailable, cryptocurrency transfers provide a fast, low-cost, borderless, and high-transparency alternative for economic assistance.

When promoting the concepts of blockchain and Web3, it is important to not only focus on the financial attributes that tokenizing brings to economic distribution, but also pay more attention to the social value that blockchain can generate.

After hearing our introduction to crypto-charity, Jacob felt excited. On one hand, Web3 may bring more charitable donations, and on the other hand, funds can reach the groups in need of funding directly, without going through government institutions, which is especially important in Africa.

Summary

Blockchain was once seen as the mainstream future technology narrative on par with AI, but influenced by the construction of digital currencies for a free economic system, it gradually lost the sense of responsibility to transform the real economy and impact the real world.

However, in terms of its technological applications, from payments to charity, blockchain has an unshakable advancement.

We are eagerly anticipating that in the next market cycle, Web3 can create positive externalities and bring decentralized and global attributes to the charity industry.
