Speaking of the importance of cryptography, Wang Xiaoyun said that cryptography is the core technology and basic support for ensuring network and information security. Its key scientific problems are mathematical problems, including basic mathematics and applied mathematics. The application of cryptography has led to breakthroughs in the research of several basic mathematical problems. At the same time, breakthroughs in the field of mathematics have also greatly promoted the rapid development of the crypto industry. In addition to mathematical problems, cryptography is also a cross-disciplinary discipline, such as operations research and artificial intelligence.
"Whether it is 3G, 4G, 5G, only the ones that are publicly available for everyone to study are safe and hidden. So far, none of them have proven to be safe." Regarding cryptography in China, Wang Xiaoyun said that "in terms of cryptographic protocols, our country and other countries are on the same starting line." China urgently needs to be the first to formulate standards and technical specifications for cryptographic protocols such as the Internet of Things, Internet of Vehicles, blockchain, and domestic operating systems. When it comes to the relationship between cryptography, hash function and blockchain, Wang Xiaoyun explained, "The hash function is the origin technology of the blockchain, and the signature technology under the hash function is the blockchain technology." Blockchain is a specialized term in hash functions, which is an old concept. "The reason for vigorously developing hash functions is on the one hand high efficiency and on the other hand hash functions can resist all attacks based on data tampering.
Speaking of the origin of blockchain technology, Wang Xiaoyun said that the hash function is an arbitrary length compressed into a fixed length, there is no desired mathematical function to meet the requirements, so cryptographer Ralph Merkle first described the Merkle-Damgard structure in his PhD M1 and M2 are compressed for the first time, and all data is compressed in blocks. This is the structure of Bitcoin and the early data structure of the blockchain.
