WikiLeaks has increased its currency, accumulating 4054 bitcoins

According to WikiLeaks' wallet address information, the site may have accumulated more than $48 million in bitcoin.

WikiLeaks holds a lot of bitcoin

"Boredguy32" posted on Red Di.com that the controversial organization may have accumulated 4054 bitcoins. Based on current prices, the value of the fund is approximately $48.23 million.

The netizen said that the organization changed its wallet in 2018. Through the analysis of its two wallets, it can be clearly seen how many BTCs WikiLeaks received in the past few years.

A large part of this funding may come from those who want to support WikiLeaks to expose government secrets. According to 2016 statistics, WikiLeaks received a total of $22 million in BTC contributions.

After WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested, his protection fund received nearly $30,000 in donations in just a few weeks.

It is unclear whether the company still holds the $48 million. Given the operational nature of WikiLeaks, there may also be substantial outflows to cover legal costs and support the operations required to disclose confidential information.

WikiLeaks may also transfer some of the funds received to an unknown wallet address. By 2020, the price of Bitcoin is expected to be as high as $28,000 to $55,000, and the organization may have a large fortune.

If WikiLeaks really sold all the bitcoins, then this behavior would be reminiscent of Laszlo Hanyecz and pizza worth 10,000 BTC.

WikiLeaks and Bitcoin: Origins

WikiLeaks created its first BTC wallet in mid-June 2011, making it one of the early adopters. However, the organization may have started using BTC before this.

As early as 2010, financial institutions such as Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and Amazon began to refuse to provide services for WikiLeaks, which also made Assange notice the bitcoin.

At the end of 2010, Bitcoin creator Nakamoto posted a post on the Bitcointalk forum:

"I don't recommend WikiLeaks to use Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a small community in its infancy and is still testing. You may only get some small money, but the attention you bring is likely to destroy us at this stage."

"WikiLeaks smashed the horse's nest, and the swarms are flying towards us."

The above paragraph was written before Nakamoto's disappearance and is one of his last articles on the Bitcointalk forum.

It can be seen that the sensitive political events involving Bitcoin are not the intention of Nakamoto. However, Bitcoin still has not been able to escape such incidents, and perhaps it is impossible to escape. After all, Bitcoin is only a neutral tool, it cannot choose. It is also impossible for the user to control the behavior of the user.
