Blockchain Game Illuvium Prepares for Epic Launch, Aiming to Win Over Mainstream Gamers

Blockchain meets mainstream Illuvium game set to make waves on Epic Games Store

Blockchain game Illuvium to make big debut on Epic Games Store

Blockchain-based game Illuvium is ready to take the gaming world by storm with its upcoming listing on the Epic Games Store. The store, known for hosting massively popular titles like Fortnite, will provide Illuvium with access to millions of PC and mobile gamers, giving the game a chance to shine on a mainstream platform.

Illuvium, developed by Illuvium Labs, is an interoperable blockchain game that has undergone significant evolution to cater to a wider audience and meet the legal and compatibility requirements of the Epic Games Store. To learn more about this exciting development, we spoke exclusively to Illuvium co-founder Kieran Warwick.

“The efforts we’ve put into meeting the Epic Games Store’s standards have not only earned Illuvium a place on this leading gaming platform, but have also pushed our product to evolve,” Warwick explained.

Built using Unreal Engine 5 on the Immutable X network, Illuvium offers players three different game genres set within its fascinating universe. The first is Overworld, an open-world exploration game and “creature capturer reminiscent of beloved classics.” The second is Arena, an auto battler strategy game, and the third is Zero, a mobile and desktop city-builder that ties into the other titles. By diversifying their game genres, Illuvium aims to attract a broader audience of gamers.

“We’ve significantly increased our addressable market by launching three different games in three different genres. However, it did take us a bit longer to reach this milestone,” Warwick adds.

Blockchain games featuring non-fungible token (NFT) elements have struggled to break into the mainstream due to various reasons. Illuvium’s team has adapted its approach to onboard more users by addressing one of the biggest frustrations with NFT games: the need for a wallet and significant investment to try out the game. Illuvium has eliminated the wallet requirement, and the game is free to play. They believe this is the key to achieving widespread adoption.

According to Animoca Brands CEO Robby Yung, mainstream game publishers have been hesitant to list games that incorporate Web3 infrastructure. The prevailing uncertainty is driven by concerns that Web3 integration could disrupt existing business models that rely on distribution fees. Warwick supports this view, acknowledging that multiple factors contribute to this prevailing attitude. Some critics worry that including NFTs in games could result in pay-to-win mechanics or compromise game design in favor of monetization.

Regulatory concerns also play a role, as blockchain technology and NFTs remain in a gray area in many regions. Games with NFT functionality could face regulatory scrutiny that impacts their viability and legality. The volatility of cryptocurrency markets and the perceived prevalence of fraud further contribute to the hesitance of mainstream publishers.

Nonetheless, Illuvium’s upcoming listing on the Epic Games Store is a significant milestone for the wider blockchain gaming industry. Being featured alongside some of the most popular mainstream games in recent years is a testament to the potential of Web3 gaming.

Warwick concludes, “This is a huge step forward. People have been saying for years that Web3 gaming is the next big thing in the crypto space.”

As investors in Web3 gaming take a more measured approach, providing greater due diligence to early-stage studios building blockchain games, the industry is poised for growth and success.

Are you ready to dive into the world of Illuvium and become a part of the future of gaming? Get your controllers ready and prepare for an adventure like no other. Let’s embrace the power of blockchain and redefine the gaming experience together!
