UN Secretary-General: we must embrace blockchain technology to better fulfill our mission in the digital age

According to Forbes on December 28, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that the United Nations must embrace blockchain technology, which is one of the technologies that the United Nations should use. He said:

"In order for the United Nations to better fulfill our mission in the digital age, we need to adopt technologies such as blockchain to help accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals."

This is not the first time Guterres has highly evaluated the potential of blockchain technology. As Cointelegraph reported last July, Guterres proposed to create a "High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation" to explicitly put blockchain technology on the agenda.

In September 2018, he also talked about how trust in national institutions, between nations, and a rules-based global order has declined, and how technology (especially blockchain) can help alleviate this problem. However, his evaluation of cryptocurrencies is not so positive:

"Organized criminal networks lurk on the dark web, using cryptography and near-anonymous cryptocurrency payments to conduct illegal population and item transactions."

Similarly, in late August, Neil Wals, head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Global Cybercrime Program, warned that cryptocurrencies make it difficult to combat money laundering greatly increase.

UN and blockchain

Since Guterres created a digital cooperation project, the use of blockchain by the United Nations has grown significantly. As Cointelegraph recently reported, earlier this month, the United Nations partnered with a blockchain financial services company to launch a blockchain tool designed to prevent exploitation of migrant workers in Hong Kong.

According to a July report, the United Nations is also working on a blockchain solution for sustainable urban development in Afghanistan.

In addition, in April this year, the chairman of the United Nations Aviation Specialized Agency stated that blockchain technology can bring huge benefits to the global aviation system.
