Ethereum’s “semantic layer”, Relation and EIP-6239

Ethereum's "semantic layer" and EIP-6239

Partner of Nothing Research, 0xTodd, talks with Relation about the concept of “semantic layer” and shares an analysis of the semantic layer as well as Relation’s proposed EIP-6239.

As we all know, the trend of Ethereum (and many other blockchains) is layering, which is a visible trend. So what is the “semantic layer”? First, we need to know the concept of semantics. Humans and machines are different. For example, if I follow you on Twitter, if you want the machine to understand this behavior, its disassembled semantics are: I (subject) + follow (predicate) + you (object).

What is the benefit of this disassembly? It can enable machines (or programs) to understand human social relationships. After all, “people are the sum of social relationships.” Understanding the relationships between people can describe the entire social graph. The relationships on the chain are especially obvious: If you understand the relationships between addresses, you can easily penetrate the logic of “smart money”, easily break through “witch attacks”, and easily complete “targeted recommendations”.

Therefore, Relation proposed EIP-6329, hoping to directly abstract such a relationship network into a layer on Ethereum. In this way, on Ethereum, a huge social relationship graph will be formed on the whole chain + off-chain. The value growth of such a relationship network is nonlinear, and the more data it has, the greater its value, especially after it exceeds the critical point. If a network has only 1% of social relationships, its value may be 1, but if it has 30% of community relationships, its value may be 900, and if it has 100%, it is not an exaggeration to say that its value is 10,000.
