Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently appeared on the podcast hosted by Sriram Krishnan and Aarthi Ramamurthy, discussing the initial perception of the crypto community towards Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the former CEO of FTX, as well as his personal views on artificial intelligence. Here are the key points compiled by Odaily Star Daily:

Many people in the industry were initially skeptical of SBF

In the podcast, Vitalik Buterin revealed that despite SBF’s high profile in the mainstream media as an industry leader, the crypto community was initially skeptical of SBF and FTX.

Vitalik Buterin said, “I think many people have this misconception that everyone respected Sam a lot, and then he surprised the whole ecosystem. I don’t think anyone expected a project worth 8 billion dollars to collapse, but if you look at Ethereum influencers like Anthony Sassano, many of them did not respect him and FTX from the beginning.”

Vitalik further explained that many people in the crypto ecosystem were skeptical of SBF because he seemed unable to clearly articulate why cryptocurrency technology is valuable.

Vitalik recalled, “He couldn’t clearly explain why cryptocurrencies are good, he simply saw it as a pure business opportunity. It’s like the idea of ‘Oh hey, cryptocurrencies are something you can make money from’.”

Vitalik contrasted SBF’s views with the values of cypherpunks and the decentralized goals that initially inspired Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other blockchain projects, stating that the disgraced entrepreneur SBF was just “repeating what others have said for many years, that ‘decentralization is a good thing, creating more open markets is a good thing’—these views have been expressed by influential people for many years.”

Vitalik pointed out, “I don’t think he ever really made the community feel that he truly believed in this vision. This is probably the main reason for the lack of trust.”

AI can enhance human creativity and assist individual creators in making movies and other artworks

Vitalik also discussed the rapid development of artificial intelligence systems such as ChatGPT and expressed optimism about their potential, believing that AI can enhance human creativity instead of completely replacing human work and talent.

Vitalik said, “I think one positive aspect of this is that it is a good example that illustrates that AI does not eliminate 30% of jobs, which would be catastrophic and scary, but rather reduces your workload by 30%, which is actually a time-saving trick.”

He admitted that as AI approaches the full capabilities of humans, more jobs will disappear, but for now, AI is something that people should embrace.

Vitalik believes that “in the first stage, which is the final step towards human-level artificial intelligence, it is interesting – it gives people more things instead of replacing humans, at least so far.”

He also mentioned that powerful artificial intelligence tools such as image generators can help individual creators produce films and other artworks without the need for expensive Hollywood-style production methods.

“What we don’t want to see is artists being replaced. What I want to see is a writer being able to not only write novels but also personally make movies,” Vitalik said. “I hope to see the cost of making a movie drastically reduce from $100,000, where a person essentially just needs to use their creativity and spend a few months using an artificial intelligence platform.”

According to him, disrupting Hollywood would be a good thing.

“We get rid of all these terrible mash-up movies, like Marvel Heroes vs. King Kong, and it’s a bit like Star Trek vs. Star Wars,” he said. “We can turn to telling real stories that reflect different human values.”

“This enhancement of existing individual creativity excites me,” Vitalik said.

In fact, Vitalik positions artificial intelligence as one of the most important developments in history. “This transformation from human to superhuman artificial intelligence (superhuman AI), I think this level of transformation has only happened three to four times in Earth’s history.”

However, Vitalik also acknowledges the need for more research and the possibility of implementing limited regulation on advanced artificial intelligence to address potential risks. He emphasizes that any regulations should be targeted, rather than implementing a comprehensive ban that would hinder innovation.

“I see these very persuasive arguments from AI risk researchers. However, we have a long history spanning hundreds of years where people predicted very terrifying consequences of the next wave of technology. Yet, century after century, we have adapted to development.”
