Blockchain Game Expert Expectations for the Remaining Time of 2023

Blockchain Game Expert Expectations for 2023

For blockchain games, this year (2023) has been a difficult year, and now two-thirds of it has passed. However, there are some vague signs of change right in front of us. Therefore, we consulted our blockchain game experts on the following questions:

Ben Cousens

ZBD Chief Strategy Officer

Although it is unrealistic to expect the problems of blockchain games to be solved within just four months (if possible), the difficulties of the past year do not mean that the prospects for the combination of games and blockchain payments are bleak. The main challenge facing the industry is the issue of reputation: this is a systemic problem that requires long-term solutions and better behavior in the cryptocurrency field. Of course, this challenge cannot be solved quickly, but changes can be made through education and continuous demonstration of meaningful and sustainable blockchain integration.

In fact, the recent change in Google allowing NFT game advertisements indicates that the broader tech industry is accepting purpose-driven blockchain implementations built by trusted participants in the industry. As we have observed ourselves, blockchain may even help companies increase game revenue in a year when the entire gaming industry faces challenges and layoffs.

Dacoco CEO

Artificial intelligence has quickly emerged, and the metaverse and web3 games are expected to reap huge benefits by the end of the year. The metaverse ecosystem revolves around the ability for communities of people to enjoy content, software, art, etc. that are built by and for all metaverse citizens.

At Dacoco, we focus on building AI-based tools to be deployed in the metaverse of alien worlds, thereby reducing the skill gap/barrier to creating exciting content. With these tools, almost anyone can create art, write immersive stories, or even program original games in Alien Worlds without art, writing, or software development skills.

As these tools mature and become more popular, we expect content creation in Alien Worlds and the entire industry to reach unprecedented scale. Most importantly, with the integration of AI into the metaverse, we will see the power and importance of operating AI models with transparency and immutable governance provided by blockchain technology. AI will become the information filter for the majority of people, so how we manage it will become as important as tracking our food sources.

These past few months have been difficult for the web3 gaming industry, but there are still signs of recovery. With the announcement of some stunning new games and plans for testing or full versions of games, there will be more high-quality games coming out.

As developers utilize mobile app stores and other distribution channels like Mojo Melee and the partnership with Amazon Prime Gaming, web3 games are being delivered to a wider gaming audience. Their adoption is crucial for the future/development of this field and is no longer just an echo chamber for web3.

Laguna Games Co-founder

I don’t expect much change in the next few months. We may see market fluctuations on a macro level, and there could be a turnaround towards the end of the year. Without significant macro drivers, we are unlikely to see the influx of players that this field urgently needs. Our focus is on web3 native users and building games for this small but high-value market.

Susan Cummings

Tiny Rebel Games CEO and Co-founder

In the coming months, I expect we will realize (for those who haven’t realized yet) that this field has been bruised, and we need to earn consumer trust. I think too many web3 game developers have fallen into the NFT minting factory (I used to be one of them). Forced to create FOMO, scarcity, and drive down prices. That’s never been the essence of web3 for games.

Digital ownership, interoperability, consumer control – all of these are great and powerful, with real value for everyone in the end. But to achieve that, we need to educate consumers and provide them with genuinely satisfying opportunities. Through games, not just “web3 games.” And the ability to control what they spend their time dealing with – being able to sell and recover some value when they’re tired of it, being able to bring it into other experiences and build new experiences with their digital assets, treating them as heirlooms for future generations.

All of this can and may be achieved over time. But first, remove NFT from your dictionary and make it an option (or introduce it later!).

Nicolas Gilot

Ultra CEO and Founder

Yes, it has been a challenging year for web3 games, but there are positive signs that things are improving. The recent DappRadar x Blockchain Games Alliance Q2 report shows a 31% increase in investment in blockchain games and metaverse projects compared to Q1 2023, reaching $973 million.

Compared to last year, we believe that blockchain games are going through a certain degree of maturity, and compared to last year, we haven’t seen as many scandals this year.

Those who are committed to building credible projects with sustainable runways are still working hard to push forward. The principle of game supremacy is the most important, and developers and publishers play a crucial role in this space, with a strong, vibrant, and engaged community. I believe this is the way this industry develops – slow but steady A/B testing, experiments, and the slow establishment of trust between the web3 gaming world and its many stakeholders.

If the next few months are dominated by more organic growth, world-building, and education, it will be a huge victory for the entire blockchain ecosystem.

Jerry Seo

Head of Delabs Business Division

The web3 gaming market is expected to wake up gradually from the stagnation of the past four months.

Despite the decline in the virtual asset market, the web3 industry continues to show continuous growth. The number of active wallet addresses has been on the rise, considering that the Asian region accounts for over 60% of virtual asset transactions, it can be seen that the number of web3 projects has significantly increased.

However, in order to achieve the development of web3 games, we need a popular product that represents web3, or a “killer game”. Whenever there is a platform or technological change, it is driven by killer applications. We have seen this trend on PCs, game consoles, mobile phones, and VR. On Steam, it’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, for Nintendo, it’s The Legend of Zelda, and for Xbox, it’s Halo.

For web3, it may be something completely different. Many are vying for this position, and it is too early to determine what it might be. However, based on current trends, it is clear that it will be driven by a “killer application”.

I believe that the next few months will largely depend on the state of the cryptocurrency market, and more importantly, on the state of the entire video game industry. Whether we will continue to see the challenges and growth of the mobile game industry will be an important determining factor for blockchain game studios to implement their strategies in the next year. The same goes for PCs and game consoles.

The excitement surrounding AI-related technologies will continue to make headlines, and we will wait and see if the next Cryptokitties or Axie Infinity-level success story will happen this year or next year.

Alexander Goldybin

Founder and Chairman of iLogos

As we navigate through a challenging year in the blockchain gaming industry, my outlook for the near future remains cautiously unchanged. I believe that any significant changes in the landscape of blockchain gaming in the coming months will depend on two key catalysts.

The first is the arrival of another bull market, which could inject new capital and activate the ecosystem. The second is the emergence of a blockbuster blockchain game, one that rivals or even surpasses the impact of Axie Infinity at its peak, in terms of publicity, daily active users, and overall market influence. Without these game-changing factors, I anticipate that things will largely remain unchanged.

We will continue to update Blocking; if you have any questions or suggestions, please contact us!
