Exploring Interoperability of Modular Blockchain: What Are the Solutions?

Modular blockchain interoperability solutions exploration.

With the growth of modularized blockchain, people’s interest in specific application blockchain space is also increasing. ZK startup company Lagrange Labs discussed common methods of modular interoperability around how to connect state issues on all these new chains, interpreted their respective use cases, and introduced Lagrange’s solution ZK MapReduce.

Two interoperability issues: 1. State fragmentation: In a modular blockchain architecture, the application’s state is stored on different execution layers, making it more difficult to retrieve and validate data; 2. Liquidity fragmentation: DeFi applications that span multiple chains will have lower liquidity on certain chains. And since assets cannot move between blockchains, DeFi users are limited to the liquidity available on specific chains.

Representative solutions: Shared sorting network: Espresso and Astria are building a decentralized sorting network that can be shared by multiple modular aggregations. Message passing protocol: A universal message passing protocol supports the transfer of arbitrary messages between different chains. Polymer Labs is building a “modular IBC transport hub.” Cross-chain liquidity router: Liquidity routers enable users to transfer assets between a pair of blockchains, and Catalyst is a representative for cross-chain asset exchange and asset pool AMM.

ZK MapReduce is the first product in the Lagrange ZK BigData stack, a distributed computing engine (based on the MapReduce programming model) used to prove the results of calculations involving large, multi-chain datasets. The ZK MapReduce proof is designed to easily combine multi-chain state data frames into a single proof. Contracts can easily verify computations running on cross-chain states by calling a public verifier contract on the Lagrange chain.
