Changtui The Magic of OP Stack - Anyone Can Issue L2

Note: This article is from @0xNing0x on Twitter, organized by MarsBit as follows:

The ERC20 standard allows everyone to issue tokens, and OP Stack allows everyone to create an L2.

Today, I tested it according to the official documentation. The technical barriers of OP Stack for developing an OP-Rollup L2 have been lowered to the same difficulty as deploying an Aptos testnet node. This allows non-professional IT personnel to easily deploy an L2 on a cloud server.

OP Stack also allows developers to flexibly configure L2 parameters and supports more in-depth custom development through OP Stack Hack.

For example, the underlying L2 of the full-chain game engine MUD is OPCraft, and the underlying L2 of the cellular automaton game is Ticking Optimism (which converts L2 from a time-driven state machine to a loop-driven state machine).

According to the official definition, OP Stack is a general development stack for building L2. However, specifically, OP Stack is actually the commercialization of the OP mainnet Bedrock version.

All L2s developed based on OP Stack share the bridge, security, communication layer, governance layer, and upgrade iteration of the OP mainnet.

The design principles of OP Stack are usability, simplicity, and scalability. I can testify to this. It only took me 2 hours this morning to understand the deployment, configuration, and debugging of OP Stack. So easy.

The OP mainnet is the first instance of OP Stack, and Base/Mantle/opBNB are OP Stack instances developed by exchanges such as Coinbase/Bybit/Binance.

Projects such as the UBI project WorldCoin and the Web3 data platform DeBank will also develop L2 based on OP Stack.

These L2s developed based on OP Stack, together with the OP mainnet, will form a multi-chain interoperable system, which the OP team calls a superchain.

The purpose of the superchain is to abstract the chain into a freely configurable unit for Web3 app developers and build a solid infrastructure for the large-scale adoption of Web3 applications.

We know that ERC20 started the frenzy of ICO asset issuance. What will OP Stack start? Here is my personal opinion:

– OP Stack has started the second half of the L2 War.

Everyone can create an L2, as mentioned by @tmel0211 before, will gradually shift the focus of the L2 War from technology-oriented to market and ecology-oriented.

In the first half of the L2 War, the representatives of OP Rollup, Arbitrum, and Optimism, have achieved overwhelming advantages over ZkRollup L2s in terms of TVL, UAW, ecological completeness, and prosperity.

Before OP Stack, the ZkRollup L2 kings could still use the inherent advantages of security, scalability, and privacy over OP Rollup and focus on technical development (such as Scroll’s efforts to achieve full equivalence of zkEVM) to please themselves or deceive VCs.

After OP Stack, with the central nodes of funds/user traffic in the crypto world, major CEXs, applications, and tools are launching their own L2s based on OP Stack in order to retain users and seize the L2 market. The market prospects for ZkRollup L2 kings have become more uncertain.

– Laying down a Bedrock for the widespread adoption of blockchain

The concepts of OP Stack’s superchain, LayerZero’s OFT full-chain token standard, LianGuairadigm’s new paradigm of inten-centric, and Vitalik’s call for AA (account abstraction) all point to a common goal: widespread adoption.

This year, we have witnessed the social value and wealth effect brought about by the widespread adoption of AI.

As a technology that emerged at the same time, blockchain has also entered the maturity phase of the Gartner Technology Adoption Curve. The social value and wealth effect brought about by the widespread adoption of blockchain will be no less than that of AI.
