Introducing the Aztec sorter’s selection for the RFP finals: B52 and Fernet

Aztec sorter's finalists: B52 and Fernet

Aztec officials announced in a statement that they have selected two finalists from the RFP (Request for Proposals) for their sorter: B52 and Fernet, and will conduct independent analysis on each of them.

On May 9th, 2023, we solicited proposals for the decentralized sorter of Layer2 zk rollups, receiving a total of 9 proposals. Subsequently, the team carefully evaluated the proposals based on design focuses such as decentralization, activity, censorship resistance, and privacy. After discussion, two candidate solutions were finally generated: B52 and Fernet.

B52 is a protocol that includes Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) and incorporates MEV into the protocol through first-price auctions to maximize the value capture of the network and address the centralizing force that PBS may generate.

Fernet is a protocol for random sorter selection. It relies on VRF to assign a random secret score to each sorter for ranking. Each sorter can propose a block based on its expected ranking. In the initial stage, sorters can reveal their scores and block proposals, and verifiers choose the proposals they want to build proofs for. In case of multiple submissions, verifiers will flock to the highest ranked submission to avoid duplicate work.
