OpenAI announced today that ChatGPT can now browse the latest information on the Internet. Previously, ChatGPT’s data information was updated until September 2021, but now there is no longer this limitation.
ChatGPT and GPT-4’s training data was last updated in 2021, and the two-year time difference has caused the results generated by ChatGPT to sometimes no longer be applicable. Many critics also believe that ChatGPT cannot be used for research purposes.
ChatGPT is now back online, providing you with the latest authoritative information and direct source links, no longer limited to data before September 2021. To enable this feature, select “Browse with Bing” in the selector below GPT-4. Currently, the “online” feature is only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, but OpenAI says it will soon expand to all users.

ChatGPT has tested this feature before but was later suspended. It is rumored that using the Browse with Bing feature allows users to bypass the paywall of certain websites and read paid content for free (such as Wall Street Journal, The Economist), which could get OpenAI into trouble (lawsuits) by harming the interests of paid content websites.
However, now it seems that this issue has been resolved. OpenAI stated that since the initial launch of the web browsing feature in May, we have received valuable feedback. This upgrade includes following robots.txt and identifying user agents so that websites can control how ChatGPT interacts with them.
ChatGPT upgrades three times a week, catching competitors off guard
The reactivation of the “online” feature is the third major ChatGPT upgrade that OpenAI has conducted in nearly a week.
On September 21, OpenAI announced the introduction of the native text-to-image model DALL·E 3 for ChatGPT, giving ChatGPT powerful drawing capabilities (expected to be officially launched in October). DALL·E 3 is the latest image generation model introduced by OpenAI, which has undergone significant upgrades compared to its predecessors and is integrated into ChatGPT for the first time. Its image generation effect is stunning and is even considered to surpass the leading AI drawing tool Midjourney in certain aspects. This has prompted Midjourney to quickly respond, with Midjourney CEO David Holz revealing that MJ V6 will be released this year, and the leap from v5 to v6 will be greater than that from v4 to v5.
On September 25, OpenAI announced the addition of new voice and image capabilities to ChatGPT, providing a new and more intuitive interface that allows for voice conversations or showing ChatGPT the content you are discussing. ChatGPT now possesses the “see, hear, speak” capabilities.
And today, ChatGPT is finally “online” again.
With three consecutive major upgrades, ChatGPT’s capabilities have been significantly enhanced. Among these three upgrades, only the “online” feature has been explicitly stated to be provided to all users in the future, including the free version. As for DALL·E 3 and voice capabilities, they are introduced for Plus and Enterprise users.
These new capabilities are indeed powerful enough, and more users may be willing to pay. It is expected that OpenAI is one step closer to its goal of achieving $1 billion in annual revenue.
